Brushstrokes & Wagging Tails paints a laughing woman in paint-splattered dungarees and her golden retriever, both sitting on the floor beside a palette. Window light falls across the wall behind them while the dog looks up at her with its tongue out. It is a happy, flat-colour piece for dog people, and for anyone who likes the idea of painting a picture about painting.

What you'll paint

Large, clean shapes do most of the work here. The woman's denim blue, the retriever's cream and honey fur and the warm light on the wall are all broad areas, with bright dabs of yellow, red and blue scattered across clothes and fur like real studio mess. The two faces carry the only fine detail: her open smile, his tongue and soft eyes. It is a relaxed, friendly painting and a good first or second kit, because the contrast is strong from the very first colour you lay down and the paint dabs are a pleasure to place.
