Krishna Ji Playing Flute paints a contemporary portrait of Krishna with closed eyes and a bamboo flute, his face split between cool blue and warm amber. A peacock feather rests in his hair, and blocks of colour run behind him like brushed bands. It is a modern take on a much-loved subject, for a living room or a prayer corner.

What you'll paint

Bands of blue, violet and gold run behind the face with a few paint splashes for movement. The skin shifts from sky blue on one side to marigold and orange on the other, and the flute, gold necklace, earrings and ring are small, bright details. The peacock feather is the most intricate part, so give it a quiet moment of its own, with the green and blue pots close to hand. Colour regions are broad and clearly separated, which makes this a medium painting that looks bold from the first few pots and grows steadily more detailed as you go.
