Pujo Nights in Calcutta paints a Durga Puja pandal at night: the multi-armed Durga with her lion, an ornate silver halo behind her, and priests tending lamps and offerings in the foreground. Marigold garlands and brass lamps glow in the warm light. It is a detailed, richly coloured scene for anyone who grew up with the Pujo season.

What you'll paint

Marigold garlands in orange fall down the figure's red-and-gold sari, a blue backdrop sets off the crown, and the circular silver arch behind her is patterned with fine detail. Four priests in white dhotis sit and stand around the altar, lit by brass lamps whose small flames glow gold. Because so many ornaments, garlands and patterns share one scene, this is a detailed painting for a long, quiet evening. Work from the large blue and silver areas inwards, and the deep blue and warm gold will give you a rich finish, while the small flames of the lamps, painted last, bring the whole scene to life.
