Postcard from Parvati Valley paints the view from a mountain room: a window opens onto a snow peak and a silver river winding through an ochre valley, while floor cushions and woven rugs fill the foreground in red and orange. Cream curtains gather on either side of the glass. It suits anyone who dreams of Himalayan mornings.

What you'll paint

The room is richly patterned, with embroidered cushions, a geometric rug in red, cream and blue, and textiles hanging from the wall. Through the window, the mountain's sunlit snow glows against a deep blue sky, and the river threads through brown and gold slopes. All those patterns make this a detailed painting, but they are built from repeating shapes that settle into a rhythm as you paint. The calm window view gives you somewhere restful to finish, and the contrast between the busy room and the quiet mountain is the heart of the piece, and it makes the finished canvas feel like a second window in your own wall.
